UK’s dilemma
UK housing data has been weak for some time, but the true nadir may be the Apr. RICS, which fell to -95.1%, its lowest reading since inception in 1978. Meanwhile UK headline CPI rose 0.8% mom, the largest monthly change in almost seven years, and pushed the year-on-year rate up to 3%, up from 2.5% in Mar. Inflation is now at the very top end of the BoE’s toleration band and this further limits the central bank’s ability to cut rates in a bid to support economic growth.
